Today, I'll be giving you a tour of our Great Room, with glimpses into other rooms, too. We moved into our newly built home in March of 2006, eight months after getting married. During the eight months before moving, we I got the old house ready to put up for sale. I don't remember the exact age of the house, but it was at least 35 years. Over the years not much had been...
done to the house. You can read more about that house HERE.This is Part 1 of the Tour of Our New Home - Part 2 will be here Tomorrow
The following photos were all taken BEFORE I removed wallpaper or did any of the painting. So all the walls are builder white...even though some of them look different colors - for what reason they do, I don't know.
Here is the middle of the house - we're looking at the wall that separates the Great Room from the Kitchen, Dining Room and the doorway to the Master Bedroom. I had a great time decorating this home, because we decided to start fresh - and we sold (or gave away) everything in the old house. As you can see we have vaulted ceilings throughout the house.
We decided to have a Manufactured House built in a Factory and delivered to our lot. That was a great idea, because our new 1650 square foot home with Great Room, Kitchen and Dining Room - open concept, 2 bedrooms with attached Bathrooms, an Office and Pantry/Laundry Room, and an attached 2 car garage cost us way less than what we were quickly able
to sell the smaller and older home for. And we love it.
There was one BIG problem though. Prior to our house being delivered to our lot, we'd had a very cold and snowy winter. However, the 2 weeks prior to the house being delivered - in 2 long sections - we had warmed way up to the 50° mark...and gotten alot of rain. The lot didn't look bad until they began backing the 1st half of our home onto the lot. They got stuck so bad, they blew the clutch in the truck that had pulled it in...just trying to get it out of the mud. I was in the car, watching...and shuddering as they rocked the house back and forth - wondering what was happening to the inside of the house - to the drywall, the cabinets, everything!
I wanted to leave, but couldn't. I had to watch. And the temps kept dropping and the wind kept howling...as they decided after the arrival of another truck, to attempt to at least get the 2nd half of the house on our lot. A job that should have taken about 90 minutes, had already taken more than 2 hours. By the time they got the 2nd half of the house far enough on the lot to not be in the road, it was well over 3 hours...2 burned out clutches - 1 on each truck and our house looked awful. It was in 2 pieces yet and both pieces were stuck in ruts at least a foot deep. Neither 1/2 of the house was sitting level. It looked awful. Then the guys just left.
The Great Room - a double reclining Sofa and 2 Recliners - by LaZBoy (great furniture) were the main pieces in there. The curtains were a wonderfully heavy draping fabric in Black with a Golden Bronze pattern in them. The curtains and pretty scalloped valances looked great and hid our white heavy duty 2" blinds when they were open.
For the 2 weeks following our house being stuck in the mud, we had sub-zero temperatures! So, our house was not only stuck in mud, but frozen in it! They eventually had to get a bulldozer in to flatten the ruts and had the dozer pull the halves of the house into position on our pilings...so they could put it together. By this time, we were trying to hurry everyone along with all the things that needed to be done in our house before we could move in. We'd already sold the old house and were given until
March 1st to vacate the house, which meant we needed to move in HERE - and that was only about 16 days AFTER the house was put together.
As you can see, I had some "Forever" Trees in our house, which looked so pretty.
There you can see into our Office, with all it's Built-Ins...and on the right of the French doors, you can see the Console I did a make-over on and you can read about that HERE.
Luckily, what should have taken a month, according to the "Boss", his crew got all the work finished on our house, so that we could move in on the 5th of March - and fortunate for us, the gal moving into our old house didn't mind us staying for those few extra days because she was on-call at the Hospital.
Surprisingly, after all the shoving, jostling, bumping through the mud and the ruts, there was no damage done to anything in our house, including windows, doors, cabinets - it was amazing!
Another look into the office on the Left (see the edge of the French Doors?) and on the Right you can see into the Guest Room which you can read about HERE, with it's attached Bathroom (our Guest Bath).
The office was the 3rd Bedroom in this house and it would have had it's entrance on the wall where the Black-Eyed Susans are on in a planter on the wall. And the wall where the French Doors go into the office would have been all solid from the windows in the front to the corner where the console is. As it is now, with the Open Concept, you can stand where the office chair is, by the window...and
look back through the house - a total of 63 feet and see the wall in the Dining Room. We love it! Our dogs love it, too!!
The open door on the left is the Guest Bathroom. This is the Great Room Wall with the Built-In Entertainment Center and 2 Bookcases...all in Ash.
Since these photos, I've gotten some most of the painting done, some rooms have been painted more than once, for many reasons, perhaps I'll share as we see those rooms.
I hope you enjoyed this mini-tour and the story about our house.
Thanks for the tour, Jan! You have a lovely home. That is some story! I would have been biting my nails watching them during the whole process. You'd think they'd know that something like that would happen given the weather conditions. At least it all seems to have worked out and, thankfully, nothing was broken or destroyed.
ReplyDeleteOh I LOVE your home!!! Very Much! ♥♥♥
